A slow crank on a cold morning is your car telling you something. It is not always the battery.

The starting and charging system is exactly that, a system. The battery stores power, the alternator replaces it, the starter draws a great deal of it at once, and cables, grounds and connections carry all of it back and forth. A weak ground or a corroded terminal produces the same symptom as a dying battery, and replacing the battery fixes it for about a month.

So we test the whole thing. Battery capacity under load, alternator output across its range, starter draw, voltage drop through the cables, and key-off current to catch a parasitic drain. Then we tell you which part is actually at fault.

Newer vehicles often need the new battery registered or the charging strategy adapted afterward. On a lot of Jeeps, Audis and late-model Toyotas, skipping that step shortens the life of the battery you just bought.

Batteries rarely fail all at once. They tend to warn you for weeks first, and the warnings are easy to explain away.

The engine turns over a half second slower than it used to. Interior lights dim when you crank. A radio preset resets itself. A warning message appears once and never comes back. The car starts fine every day but struggles after sitting through a long weekend.

How you drive matters as much as the battery's age. Short trips never fully replace what starting consumes. Extended idling, heavy accessory loads, seasonal storage and a cold snap all pull in the same direction. Modern vehicles also keep drawing power after you walk away while modules finish shutting down, so a small extra draw that would have gone unnoticed years ago can now flatten a battery overnight.

If you have jump started the car more than once this year, that is worth a test before it strands you somewhere less convenient.
