Exhaust & Muffler Repair

An exhaust leak is one of the few problems that is both cheap to fix and genuinely worth fixing quickly.

The obvious version is noise: a change in tone, a drone at certain speeds, a rattle over bumps, a ticking that fades as the engine warms. The less obvious versions matter more. A leak ahead of an oxygen sensor lets outside air into the stream, which skews the sensor reading, which causes the engine computer to adjust fueling for a condition that does not exist. The result is a drivability complaint that has nothing to do with the exhaust on paper.

We inspect the full system for integrity, corrosion, damaged piping, failed flex sections, broken hangers and catalyst condition, and we look at the related engine data before deciding what is cause and what is effect.

Rust does most of the damage to exhaust systems around here, and it does it from the inside as often as the outside.

Short trips are the worst case. Condensation forms inside the system on every cold start and only burns off once everything reaches full temperature, so a car that mostly runs errands accumulates moisture in the muffler and pipes for years. Add winter road salt on the outside and the system gets attacked from both directions.

Signs to watch for are a tone that has deepened gradually, a rattle from a loose heat shield or a broken hanger, visible flaking around welds and seams, or exhaust smell reaching the cabin. That last one is worth immediate attention rather than a scheduled appointment.

On performance builds, the conversation shifts to fitment, clearance, heat management and how a change in flow interacts with tuning. Different goal, same principle: the system has to work as a system.
