RAM Diesel Regen Habits
How a RAM diesel is driven determines how much trouble its emissions system gives you, and most owners are never told that.
Regeneration needs sustained exhaust temperature to complete properly, and that requires the truck to be working. A pattern of short trips, extended idling and low-load driving means regens start, get interrupted, and start again. Over time that shows up as more frequent cycles, longer ones, reduced fuel economy and eventually a warning light for something that began as a usage pattern rather than a fault.
The early RAM signs are worth noticing. Regens happening more often than they used to. Fuel economy sliding a few tenths. A cycle that seems to run longer before completing.
At that stage a RAM filter service, a sensor or a fluid item is usually the whole repair. Left alone it becomes considerably more.
If the truck's duty cycle is genuinely short trips and idling, that is workable. It just means the maintenance plan needs to account for it rather than assume highway miles.
