Subaru Tires Must Match
Tire circumference matters more on a Subaru than on almost any other car, and it is an easy and expensive mistake.
The all-wheel-drive system expects all four wheels to turn at essentially the same rate. Replace one tire on a car with three worn ones, or fit a set with a different rolling diameter, and the difference gets absorbed by the center differential or the transfer clutch. On some platforms that produces a binding sensation in tight turns. On others it quietly destroys an expensive component over months.
The practical rule is to replace all four together, keep them rotated, and check that tread depths stay within a small tolerance of each other. If only one tire is damaged and the rest have significant life left, shaving a new tire to match is a legitimate and much cheaper option than four new ones.
