Timing Belt & Chain Service

Timing service is preventive maintenance with unusually high stakes, which is why the interval is worth respecting.

On a belt driven engine, the manufacturer publishes a replacement interval in both time and mileage, and the time half matters just as much on a low mileage car. Many engines are what is called an interference design, meaning a failed belt allows valves and pistons to meet, and a maintenance item turns into an engine rebuild in a fraction of a second.

Chain driven engines are not maintenance free either. Guides, tensioners and chain stretch produce noise on startup, camshaft correlation codes, rough running or oil pressure concerns, and oil condition has a direct effect on how long the system lasts.

Subarus, Audis, Honda V6s and turbocharged European platforms each have their own requirements. Timing components are replaced with OEM Parts or equivalent quality, loaners are available, and qualifying timing repairs carry our 2-year/24,000-mile nationwide warranty. When a timing job is happening, a few related decisions are worth making at the same time.

The labor to reach a timing belt also reaches the water pump, tensioners, idlers, seals and often the thermostat. Replacing those while everything is apart costs a fraction of what it costs to go back in for one of them in two years. On most engines we recommend it, and we will show you why.

The other question is timing, in the calendar sense. A belt is the rare component where waiting carries genuine risk rather than just inconvenience, so it deserves to move ahead of items that can safely be deferred.

If your car came to you used and the history is unclear, assume the service has not been done. It is a common gap, particularly on cars that changed hands around the interval, and it is one of the first things we check on a pre-purchase inspection.
