Emissions Repair & Test Readiness

Failing an emissions test is frustrating, mostly because the reason is rarely obvious from the outside.

An emissions failure can come from a catalyst that has lost efficiency, an evaporative system leak the size of a pinhole, an oxygen sensor that is reading correctly and reporting a real problem, a misfire you cannot feel, or a fuel trim that has drifted far enough to trip a monitor. Clearing the code does not address any of it, and it resets the readiness monitors, which puts you further from passing than when you started.

Our emissions diagnostics evaluate fuel trims, sensor response, catalyst operation, evaporative system integrity, ignition performance and live data to find what is actually causing the fault. Then we tell you what needs repair, what needs more testing, and what simply needs drive time to complete its self checks.

New York's emissions requirements are more specific than most drivers realize, and knowing them saves a wasted trip.

Orange County sits outside the New York Metropolitan Area, so vehicles registered here fall under the state's Upstate inspection and maintenance program. Most gasoline vehicles from model year 1996 and newer, and most diesel vehicles from 1997 and newer with a gross vehicle weight rating under 8,501 pounds, receive an OBDII emissions inspection. That test checks the malfunction indicator lamp and reads the results of the vehicle's own onboard diagnostic self tests.

There are age based exemptions at both ends. Vehicles 25 model years and older are exempt, and so are vehicles two model years and newer.

The part that catches people out is readiness. After a battery disconnect, a cleared code or a repair, the vehicle has to complete a series of self tests before it can be inspected, and that takes driving. We will tell you where yours stands before you go.
